Introduction
Here is a picture
of a tea glass (picture I made myself - resolution 3264 x 2448 pixels) that I intend
to reproduce with the Adobe Illustrator software (CS5).
And here is the result after some effort (and about 16 hours of work):
The body of the glass
I begin by drawing the outline of the glass:
Once satisfied with the result, I duplicate the path for future use (clipping mask, for example) and then I create a gradient mesh (while taking care
to minimize the number of points):
The bottom of the glass
Then I choose to continue by the drawing of the bottom of the glass, creating a linear gradient of 2 colors (0 ° angle, feather 3 pixels) like this:
·
Location 0%, RGB = 140, 139, 132
·
Location 100%, RGB = 165, 159, 145 (Distribution:
30-70%)
Read the post "Notation for color gradients"
for more information.
I continue with a
gradient mesh to make the light effects of the bottom of the glass (feather 3
pixels):
The following path is an elliptical outline color RGB = 165, 159, 145, brush "Pencil - Thin", thickness: 2 pts., transparency "Overlay" and opacity to 55%:
The path following (placed above it) is also an elliptical
outline color RGB = 165, 159, 145, brush "Pencil - Thin",
thickness: 1 pt. and 1.2 pixel Gaussian Blur:
The result is encouraging, but I consider that it is necessary to enhance light reflections by creating various small paths of light color. I give two examples of these paths below.
The first paths of color RGB = 239, 209, 157
and 1 pixel Gaussian Blur:
The second paths filled with white color (RGB = 255, 255, 255) and 1 pixel Gaussian Blur:
The various small clear reflections given by the lighting are reproduced below (different colors near white) and 1 pixel Gaussian Blur:
The drawing of the lower part of the glass ends with the 2 paths
shown below:
As an example, the path on
the right side is filled with color RGB = 184, 173, 147
and feather 3 pixels:
The final result for the drawing of the bottom of the glass is zoomed below (picture):
And below the drawing:
The background of the
glass
The background of
the glass is not at the bottom of the glass (you will have noticed that), but
about 2/3. The design begins with a linear gradient of 2 colors (angle 90°,
Transparency "Darken" and feather 3 pixels):
·
Location 0%, RGB = 140, 139, 132
·
Location 100%, RGB = 214, 211, 199 (Distribution:
30-70%)
I continue with a path filled with color RGB = 148, 144, 133 and 1 pixel Gaussian Blur:
Then a gradient
mesh (feather 3 pixels) materializes a part of the play of shadows and lights:
A second gradient
mesh (Transparency "Lighten") is used to lighten a little more the background:
The two paths on the
sides (one on the left, of color RGB = 109, 110, 108 and the
other one on the right of color RGB = 146, 144, 138)
are with 1 pixel Gaussian
Blur:
The different bright reflections are made with a series of paths with Transparency "Hard Light", 75% opacity and feather 1 pixel:
Other light and
dark reflections are with 0.3 pixel Gaussian
Blur:
The result is zoomed below (picture):
And the drawing is below:
The design on the glass
The drawing on the glass starts
with a linear gradient of 7 colors taken on the picture using the Eyedropper
tool (0 ° angle and feather 2 pixels):
·
Location 0%, RGB = 59, 48, 28
·
Location 27%, RGB = 75, 53, 25 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 47%, RGB = 122, 93, 52 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 61%, RGB = 211, 166, 94 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 75%, RGB = 176, 126, 63 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 90%, RGB = 122, 93, 52 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 100%, RGB = 75, 53, 25 (Distribution:
50-50%)
Horizontal lines are made with 2 lines (top and bottom), each line in two parts (left and right) and all
the paths are with brush "Pencil" (thickness: 1.5 pt.) and 70% opacity:
The left parts (top and bottom) are filled with color RGB = 52, 122, 93
The right parts (top and bottom) are filled with color RGB = 203, 184, 150.
The drawing of the
central diamond is made of paths with brush "Crayon -
Thin" (thickness: 2 pts.) and RGB color = 214, 211, 199:
The following 2 diamonds are made the same
way but with Transparency "Soft Light", the further to the right is filled
with color RGB = 235, 230, 212:
The two diamonds on the
left are made the same way with a white color (RGB = 255, 255, 255)
and Transparency "Overlay":
The drawing of the ½ diamonds are paths with brush "Crayon -
Thin" (thickness: 2 pts.) and from the
left to the right:
·
Path
1: color RGB = 203, 180, 150 and Transparency "Overlay"· Path 2: color RGB = 214, 211, 199 and Transparency "Normal"
· Path 3: color RGB = 196, 194, 185 and Transparency "Soft Light"
· Path 4: color RGB = 203, 180, 150 and Transparency "Overlay"
The ½ diamonds of the
bottom are identical to those of
the top.
The drawing
of the triangles is made with 2 blends.
The right one is
made with 2 triangles (brush "Pencil" and thickness: 1 pt.):· left triangle color RGB = 214, 211, 199
· right triangle color RGB = 162, 137, 101
The one on
the left is made with 2 triangles (brush "Pencil", thickness: 1 pt. and
Transparency "Overlay".)
·
left triangle color RGB = 196, 194, 185 · right triangle color RGB = 162, 137, 101
The inscription under the bottom line looks
like an arabesque. So I searched on the
internet the Arabic translation of any text (green
arrow) and I have scaled these letters (color RGB = 203, 184, 150, 70% opacity and thickness: 1 pt.) under the horizontal
line at the bottom (red arrow):
Same thing for inscriptions around the diamonds:
The set is placed in 75% opacity:
Then the
following paths will help to
make the effects of light and
shadow on the glass. First, the dark
shadow on the left is
made with a linear
gradient of 2 colors (angle 0 °, Transparency "Hard
Light" and opacity 85%):
·
Location 76%, RGB = 75, 53, 25· Location 100%, RGB = 160, 122, 74 (Distribution: 66-34%)
Followed by a dark
shadow on the right made with a linear
gradient of 3 colors (angle 0°, Transparency "Hard
Light" and opacity 60%):
·
Location 16%, RGB = 75, 53, 25· Location 64%, RGB = 160, 122, 74 (Distribution: 66-34%)
· Location 100%, RGB = 75, 53, 25 (Distribution: 50-50%)
Then a light in
the center made with a linear gradient of 4 colors
(angle 0°, 2 pixels Gaussian
Blur and Opacity 60%):
·
Location 0%, RGB = 59, 48, 28· Location 27%, RGB = 197, 115, 38 (Distribution: 26-74%)
· Location 59%, RGB = 122, 93, 52 (Distribution: 66-34%)
· Location 95%, RGB = 176, 126, 63 (Distribution: 50-50%)
A clear
spot on the right is made with a linear
gradient of 2 colors (-180 ° angle and
Transparency "Soft Light"):
·
Location 35%, RGB = 250, 236, 196· Location 100%, RGB = 176, 126, 63 (Distribution: 77-23%)
The symmetrical light on the
left is made the same way. The dark
streaks are made with 6 paths (2 pixels Gaussian
Blur and Opacity 50%):
One of six paths is described
below as an example:
Path with a linear
gradient of 5 colors (angle 0°):
·
Location 0%, RGB = 59, 48, 28
·
Location 27%, RGB = 75, 53, 25 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 58%, RGB = 122, 93, 52 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 78%, RGB = 176, 126, 63 (Distribution:
50-50%)
·
Location 100%, RGB = 122, 93, 52 (Distribution:
50-50%)
To finish the design on
the glass, I added a dark patch with a linear
gradient of 2 colors (0 ° angle, opacity 70%, feather 5 pixels and
Transparency "Hard Light"):
·
Location 75%, RGB = 75, 53, 25
·
Location 100%, RGB = 160, 122, 74 (Distribution:
66-34%)
The drawing on the
other side of the glass is made
with a copy of all the drawing done above
then adapted and scaled to give
the following result:
At this stage, it is
useful to compare the results obtained zoomed to the
design on the glass. Below the picture:
And here the
drawing:
The top of the glass
Here, close-up, the picture of the
top of the glass (which
does not seem easy to reproduce ...):
I start the
drawing of the top of the glass by a

· Location 26%, RGB = 160, 122, 74 (Distribution: 50-50%)
· Location 53.5%, RGB = 109, 107, 76 (Distribution: 50-50%)
· Location 91%, RGB = 250, 236, 196 (Distribution: 83-17%)
· Location 96%, RGB = 82, 55, 20 (Distribution: 64-36%)

The bright

Thin", thickness:
1 pt., Transparency "Lighten" and 0.5 pixel Gaussian
Blur:
The bottom edge of
the glass in the foreground is a linear
gradient of 7 colors (angle 0° and
feather 2 pixels):
·
Location 6%, RGB = 72, 60, 46· Location 16%, RGB = 160, 122, 74 (Distribution: 50-50%)
· Location 51.5%, RGB = 129, 114, 95 (Distribution: 50-50%)

Light reflections are made
with paths listed below:
The 2 paths (arrows left and
right) are star-shaped filled with color RGB = 255, 252, 227, over a path of white color in a
circle and a white color line, all
placed in 0.5 pixel Gaussian
Blur:
Other white color light
points are described below:

The final result for the upper
part of the glass is shown
below:
The drawing of the glass as a
whole is shown below:
The background
It remains to draw the
background which is composed of a round marble
table on which is placed the glass and a
fictional setting of flowers and foliage (different from the
picture). The play of shadows and
lights resulting from the natural
light of the sun available that day will be
noted.
The drawing begins
with a gradient mesh with
feather 12 pixels:
Followed by a second gradient
mesh drawing the darker edge of the table,
feather 5 pixels:
The shadow on the top
of the table is enhanced with a linear
gradient of 2 colors (angle 0°, and Gaussian
